Forks was named for its location at the forks of the Calawah, Soleduck and Bogachiel rivers. It first attracted settlers in the late 1860s and was created by years of burning by the Indians to encourage wild berries, elk and deer.

The first settlement in the 1870s was named Fords Prairie. However, there was already a town with the same name so it soon became known simply as Forks. Agriculture and dairy products were the first industries.

However, it was the gold rushes and demand for forest products that enabled Forks to grow. After the gold rush, timber became the economic base and continues today. Due to its nearness to other cities and recreation, Forks today is a tourist paradise.
